As you are aware sales are the lifeblood of any business. Without sales you do not have any money to support your business for yourself. This is especially true in the donut business or any food related business for that matter. It is very important to have a good marketing plan and plan of action for how you will market your donut business.

We plan on focusing on one venue at first then branching out to other areas to market to. This way we can focus our attention on what works for the particular market we're working with. What works in one market will not necessarily work in another. We have learned that from our online ventures over the past several years. Hopefully we can secure a spot at one of the local recreation areas/mall in our area. It is an outdoor mall concept that is very popular in many of the bigger cities. I believe the outdoor mall concept is the wave of the future, as I've mentioned several weeks ago. I actually like the outdoor mall better than the enclosed mall it just seems much less depressing. I was in our local mall today and I am just surprised that is still open. A lot of the malls similar to this one are closed in medium-sized cities. I walked around and just feel depressed, there's no light coming in and looks dated it is just overall not appealing to me. I believe outdoor mall concept is dying quicker than most people believe. There is a spot open in the mall that would be interesting to put one of our doughnuts shops in, and I would not even begin to imagine how much that would cost. If we were going to do something like this it would be in the center aisle of the mall where there is the most traffic. But like I've mentioned before, I just do not believe this is a good idea. We are going to stay away from malls. The place we are talking about putting in downtown Huntington is basically a concession cart. If the rent is not too high that we may be able to pull it off.

If this does not work we are thinking about marketing to churches. We are going to get a database of churches and send a mailing telling them that we will set up shop in their church and sell our doughnuts. We can split the profits equally and still be ahead. I think there is a lot of money and selling doughnuts to churches, especially at their social events. I am very eager to market to this group of people. I think it will be very interesting, to see what happens. In the end marketing is a very important part of your business plan. Be sure you have a good marketing plan as well as a business plan before you start in your ventures.

Do you want to have a small business or do you want to go big? There is basically two things you can do when starting a donut business, you can start small or start big. When you start small, you buy a basic donut making machine from someone, set up at a church or local event, perhaps even a fair or festival. You could travel around to different places close to your area and probably do very well. It would not take very long for people to fall in love with your doughnuts. People fall in love with your doughnuts if you have a good recipe and they follow you, and perhaps tell their friends all about you. You could even set up little doughnut boxes in local businesses.

If you do not want to start small and you have the capital and resources to do so, you may want to go big and buy into a donut franchise. There is an enormous amount of capital required in order to start a donut franchise as you can imagine. The rewards can be great plus you have the backing of someone who is experienced in the industry. This experience can be very valuable as you work your way through the business. You do not have to worry about trial and error, making mistakes as they have your back. I personally was always leery about franchises in other industries. I had once thought about opening up a cleaning business using a franchise system. But luckily I was talked out of it. If I was not talked out of it could be several thousand dollars in debt to this day. Thank goodness I never went through with it that started it on my own. We have a blog about that as well you may want to look into it.

Look up donut franchise on the Internet and you will see several resources regarding this industry. Be sure that you have your financial house in order though, because it will be required in order for you to sign on the dotted line. This is pretty much the case with all franchises, you need to have your financial house in order. You can most definitely make it without a franchise, sometimes it may be even better.

Having a plan of action is one of the most important keys to your success in business. Not only should you have a plan of action but you should stay organized and actually stick with your plan. Not having a plan for what you want to do is like traveling somewhere and not knowing where you're going or Having a map to get there. It is very important to write down the steps you need to take in order to get where you want to be. If you want to start a donut business You need to know exactly what is going to take to make that happen.

Everything starts with research. We've researched the donut business extensively on the Internet. We do not find a lot of information, or exactly what we are looking for. The product that we promote on our blog is very good and is the only thing that we have found that will tell you from start to finish exactly what you should be doing. It is very specific on what you should be doing with your donut business. Is a highly recommended resource, and will save you a lot of time and aggravation from doing a dead-end search. You also need to decide what kind of donut business that you want to have. Do you want one where you sell small doughnuts Or one where you have a variety of doughnuts and flavors plus sell coffee and other drinks. You need to know whether you want a donut franchise or simply a donut machine that you take to fairs and festivals. We have discussed in the past the advantages and disadvantages of having a donut franchise or taking a donut machine to fairs and festivals. Do a search on our blog for donut franchise and you will find topics related to that on our blog. We cannot emphasize enough having a plan of action and specify what you need to do in order to run and operate or even start your businesses.

Not only do you need to have a plan of action when you start a business, but you need to focus. I have had a lot of trouble focusing in the past. I tried to juggle more than one project at a time. Doing this I get nothing done. I have a lot of things I need to do but nothing ever gets done completely. Focus and zero in on what you need to do. If you want to operate a donut business start from the beginning, research do your homework, do everything necessary to get that started. Take a primer on starting a business. Then do your research on the donut business. After you do this focus on the donut business. I cannot stress this enough, to focus on what you are going after. You know want to start a diamond business, open a bar, then open a franchise of some sort. Have a plan of action, focus, then make it happen.

So you interested in making easy money, who isn't? As you know there are four of us in this little doughnut venture that we have been doing or thinking about for almost a year now. It was conceived in Rehoboth Beach, after discussing some projects we wanted to get into in the future. The four of us have two or three meetings every year discussing the details of what we are doing. We look to find new projects, assess what we have done in the past and looke for what we're going to do in the future. Each of us come from a different background, and each of us bring something unique to the table, which makes it a very nice business marriage.

Like anything in business,the donut business is not a get rich quick scheme. Like everything else in life, it takes work and dedication. As those who manage their time and learn from their mistakes that will be successful. You've heard the old adage when you first learned to ride a bicycle, when you fall, you get up and try again until you learn how to do it correctly. This is what happens in business. Myself, I've had a lot of failures. I have made many many mistakes. I try to learn from my mistakes and I never give up. There is nothing better than the school of hard knocks.

There's a lot to do from the inception of your idea to the point when you are making money. Many of you are tired of your jobs, afraid of what is around the corner And overall just burnouts on everything. The best advice I can give you before you start to make the so-called easy money is try to get your debts paid off, the bad debt. This is something that will never go away and will hunt you the rest of your life. Did you knows that bill collectors can come after you Pretty much the rest of your life, as long as it has not been paid? The debt just gets sold over and over and over and over and over. It may have been erased from your credit score, and I'm not telling you to pay it, but it still can haunt you. Please do not go into debt, especially on frivolous things that you do not need. Using debt wisely, such as to finance a fledgling business, can be a wise thing if done correctly. It is not wise however, to use debt to finance things such as vacations, clothes, cars etc. Of course the donut businesses is not the only way to make the so-called easy money, There are more ideas than I can even put in this one blog post. Bottom line is keep your mind open and stay out of debt. That can be a good thing, but as I previously said, do not use it to finance things you do not need. Saved debt to finance business ideas where you have a solid business plan and a way to get out of the business of necessary.

We talked last week the importance of having a business plan for your doughnut shop business. It is also equally important to have a plan for marketing. We touched on this briefly a few months ago but would like to discuss it in more detail and in our post today.

Your overall marketing plan should cover 3 to 6 months. You need to determine how much money you're going to commit to marketing your doughnut business. You also will determine how the money will best be spent and be realistic on your goals. After this you will need to determine your target market. Where are you going to sell your donuts and to whom. Who are the people that are most likely to buy your product? Do they have families? Does it matter how much money they make? You do not want to answer every one to these questions. Everyone is not who your target market is, do not fool yourself into thinking this, it is a mistake that a lot of people make. Target different people with different marketing, most of the big companies do this. Your marketing will be different to college students that will be to stay-at-home moms.

Think about how you're going to reach these people, are you going to use a mailing list? Are you going to put an ad in the paper? Are you going to give away free samples? Putting an ad in the paper or using a mailing list could be a start in getting the word out for your donut business. Especially if you want to set up shop there and sell them at their venue, i.e. their church, school or whatever. If you decide to use a mailing list, narrow it down as much as possible. You can buy mailing list of all the churches in your town. A lot of times they will even mail the postcards or letter for you. Don't buy from the first-person that tries to sell you a mailing list, you could get burned very quickly. Pay attention to your marketing, it can mean the success or failure of your business.
